By mid-April, pods begin the return migration to subarctic waters, though stragglers linger into early May.
Kailua-Kona's position on the leeward coast means morning departures between 7 and 10 AM encounter the glassiest sea conditions. Afternoon trade winds, known locally as the Kona winds, can whip the surface and obscure underwater shadows.
